| CLUB NOKIA DIGITAL TIMELINE |
Currently under construction. Visitors to Club Nokia in Los Angeles will be encouraged to take photos and videos of their experiences there and to upload them to a collective, large-scale digital timeline located on a wall and in floor screens in the entry hall. For the floor screens, users will be able to "surf" the timeline using pressure-sensitive floor sensors to go up and down the timeline and to select and view the photos and videos visitors have placed in the timeline.

| URBANIST PRINCIPLE LIVABILITY CALCULATOR |
Deciding where to live in a particular city goes beyond the cost of renting or purchasing a home. The Urbanist Principle Livability Calculator provides a simple interface to measure the desirability and livability of various Manhattan neighborhoods based on a set of urbanist principles. Users can weigh or eliminate factors according to what they deem most important to create a customized textual representation. It can be a valuable tool for determining, for example, if a user wants to move in or out of a particular neighborhood or if a user is trying to decide between living in two or more different neighborhoods. (Note: This is a prototype and only the "East Village" is linked to the score page.)

| INTERNET ACCESS AND CONTROL IN CHINA: A CASE STUDY |
| Controls on access to information and on the free expression of ideas, especially via the internet, are a clear threat to vital and meaningful democracy, both here in the United States and abroad. With such control possible, and with consolidation of mass media increasing, it becomes all the more critical to preserve the democratic discourse made possible by a free internet. To understand how the flow of information can be regulated and restricted, the current state of affairs in China can be studied ... more |

| A COMPARISON OF THE PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION AND SALES NETWORKS FOR MARIJUANA AND COCAINE |
| Marijuana and cocaine are two of the most popular illicit drugs consumed in the United States. Estimates from the Office of National Drug Policy indicate that, as of 2005, a growing number of Americans are using either marijuana or cocaine or both. According to their official numbers there are around 11 million Americans who are at least occasional users of marijuana or hashish and anywhere from 2.6 to 6 million Americans who are at least occasional cocaine users. To supply them there are sophisticated and expansive commercial networks that produce, process, distribute and sell these drugs ... more |

| MEMORY, IMMEDIACY AND OBLIVION |
How durable is the moment?
I found out recently that the wife of a good friend is pregnant. He mentioned that she doesn't want a video camera around after the baby is born. She's convinced that he'll be behind the camera, disengaged, just recording and documenting the family's activities rather than actively participating in what's happening in front of the camera ... more |

| SALAFI JIHAD NETWORK STRUCTURE |
The global Salafi (from the Arabic word Salafiyyah referring to the companions of Muhammad) jihad is part of an Islamic fundamentalist revival movement. Its origins can be traced back about forty years to an extremely influential Egyptian Islamist named Sayyid Qutb. As a member of a political organization called the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, he wrote several books which together have formed a main intellectual backbone of violent Salafist fundamentalism. The Salafi movement preaches a restoration of authentic Islam--Islam as lived in everyday life by Muhammad, his companions and their two succeeding generations ... more |

| MEDIA LITERACY AND EDUCATION |
| Once media and its many messages became both pervasive and monopolized by a few international conglomerates, it became critically necessary for our society to be able to decode, deconstruct and understand the messages being delivered. Incessant and ubiquitous marketing--whether of culture, politics, goods or propaganda--makes it necessary and important for us, as involuntary media consumers, to be aware of it, to embrace it and to immerse ourselves in it ... more |

| MEDIA CREATION AND CONTROL: A FUNDAMENTAL SHIFT |
All media are not the same: different media have different biases. Some tend to empower centralized, top-down authorities while weakening the periphery, while others tend to empower those who were formerly on the edges. Some reinforce the status quo, while others tend to dissemble it ... more |
